DETROIT (WWJ) – Authorities are investigating after suspects in a recent carjacking were arrested after crashing on a downtown Detroit freeway Monday afternoon.
Michigan State Police officials say two canine units were assisting the Detroit Police Department’s Auto Theft Unit Monday as they were surveilling the suspect vehicle.
When a trooper tried to pull the car over, the suspect fled east on Jefferson into downtown, MSP officials said.
The trooper tried to chase the suspect, but ended the pursuit when the suspect began driving erratically and lost sight of the car.
Troopers found the car crashed on the right shoulder of northbound I-375 under the Larned Street overpass and a bystander pointed in the direction the suspects ran.
A short time later officers on the ground found all the suspects that were inside the vehicle, as well as a handgun, which was also pointed out by the initial bystander.
MSP says Detroit police are handling the rest of the investigation.
Authorities did not release any information about the original carjacking that prompted the investigation. It was not clear how many people were arrested after Monday’s pursuit.
