TAYLOR (WWJ) -- Police say the mother of a 4-year-old boy wounded in a shooting lied about how and where he got shot.
The good news is, the child is going to be OK.
According to Detroit Police, the boy was shot at around 6 p.m. Tuesday at a home in Taylor.
An investigation found that the victim's uncle accidentally discharged a shotgun on the second floor of the house, striking the child — who was on the first floor — with birdshot.
Police did not know about the shooting until they got a call from the hospital about the wounded boy at around 5 a.m. Wednesday.
The boy's mom told investigators that her son was struck in a drive-by shooting at a bus stop on Joy and Evergreen roads in Detroit. But as police begin investigating, the details did not add up.
"We were unable to find a scene at the location and we were unable to get any collaboration from any witnesses," DPD Commander Arnold Williams told WWJ Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton.
At a news conference later Wednesday, Detroit Police Chief James said suvelience video could not confirm that anything at all happened at the bus stop. There were no casings on the scene, and no one in the area hears any shots.
While nothing that the mom was clearly traumatized by what happened to her child, White was frustrated by the lack of cooperation by the boy's family in helping police get to the bottom of what happened.
Another concern: "The child was not immediately transported to the hospital," White said. "What we have now is that about 10 p.m. (four hours after the shooting) was the first time a doctor laid eyes on the victim."
While, thankfully, the boy is expected to make a full recovery, the chief called what happened "extremely troubling."
"...We have a baby shot, again," White said. "We should all be concerned. We should all, at this point be starting to get frustrated with this. I mean, we've gotta be vocal, we have to do better. These are our babies."
It's not yet clear what charged the uncle and the mother may face in this case.
The Taylor Police Department is taking over the investigation, which is ongoing.
