PONTIAC (WWJ) -- Outdoor fun was front and center today as city officials, residents and skate enthusiasts attended a groundbreaking ceremony for Pontiac Skatepark in Oakland Park.

Those who attended the event were able to view the final designs for the new skatepark as well as plans to accentuate the development.

"We are thrilled to move forward with this state-of-the-art enhancement to our city’s recreational facilities," Mayor Tim Greimel said at the event, adding that the upcoming skatepark was made possible by the combined efforts of neighborhood leaders, private donors and the county government.

Through fundraising and fund-matching programs, the city was able to secure $550,000 toward the skatepark's construction. The Oakland County Commission committed $125,000, with another $55,000 provided by the city.

Significant contributions also came from McLaren Oakland Hospital and Girls' Friendly Society, allowing proponents of the new park to obtain fund-matching grants from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation Built to Play Program and The Skatepark Project.

Benjamin Bashein, Executive Director of The Skatepark Project, considers the new Pontiac site to be a win, not only for the city, but for Southeast Michigan overall.

"The addition of this Built to Play Skatepark is an important part of getting young people physically active through free recreational opportunities," Bashein said.

Officials also emphasized the necessity of providing safe places for Pontiac kids and young adults.

"Skateparks are important because they build and sustain healthy communities," said City Council President Pro Tem William Carrington. "As a gathering place... the skatepark will provide a forum for visitors young and old, beginners and skilled, to meet and share experiences."

Project backers are grateful that their hard work is paying off. "This project will literally be concrete in a matter of months," said Marijayne Renny with The Pontiac Skatepark Project. "We couldn't be more excited."

The Pontiac Skatepark project describes itself as "a ragtag group of different skaters and community members that want a skate park in the City of Pontiac."

Members hoped to create a functional and safe space for skating and to make a positive impact through engagement and grassroots efforts.

The Pontiac Skatepark is expected to be completed this summer.

This upcoming project is great news for Pontiac. Attendees to today’s event had a chance view the final designs for the new skatepark and other plans to accentuate the development. Residents were ecstatic and openly expressed why this family-friendly gathering spot is vital to the community.
