CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) – The parents of a 2-year-old boy who apparently starved to death are being held on $1 million bond after being charged with murder in his death in Clinton Township.

Sierra Zaitona, 27, and Jonathon Cheek, 26, are facing second-degree murder and child abuse charges for the death of the toddler.

The cause of death has been listed as starvation, according to a report from WDIV. It was not immediately clear when or where the child died.

Other details of the case have not been released, though the parents were arrested last week. Prosecutors argued both parents are a flight risk, even claiming Zaitona allegedly had the baby in Ohio “to avoid alerting CPS.”

Prosecuting attorney Molly Zappitell told the judge the child had been healthy in foster care, but “met its demise” once it was returned to the care of its biological parents.

The parents are due back in court next month.
