(WWJ) A U.S. Coast Guard search of the Detroit River has been suspended after rescued crews failed to find a missing man who fell through the ice.

Speaking to WWJ Newsradio 950 Wednesday evening, Coast Guard Lt. Timothy Wyderko said the man disappeared at around 5:10 p.m., just off Belle Isle, across from the Belle Isle Casino.

"We received a report from Detroit Police, Detroit Fire and MSP (Michigan State Police) of an individual who was on the ice in the Detroit River. And he went out onto the ice and he fell into the water, and that's what we know at this time," Wyderko said, Wednesday evening.

As for why the man went out onto the water, that was not immediately clear.

Wyderko said the man was with a couple of people when he walked out onto the ice and began "jumping up and down."

The water temperature of the river Wednesday night was listed as 32 degrees.

"So we're actively searching for the individual. We've got a rescue team from station Belle Isle out there, and we've also launched a helicopter from air station Detroit to search," Wyderko said, Wednesday night. "We're doing everything we can to locate the individual and get him out of the water."

Rescue crews searched late into the night, but were was not not able to find the man. The Coast Guard said they would decide Thursday if and when the search would resume.

Details about him, including his name and age, have not been released.
