Michigan doctor suspended for issuing nearly 22,000 medical marijuana cards in one year

(WWJ) -- A two-year suspension has been upheld for a doctor accused of approving nearly 22,000 medical marijuana certificates in one year.

Earlier this week the Michigan appeals court upheld the suspension for Dr. Vernon Proctor, who allegedly approved 21,708 certificates for medical marijuana use in a 12-month span between 2015-16 -- a feat at least one expert says would be impossible.

People looking to get a medical marijuana card from the state need approval from a doctor, which requires doctors to conduct exams, obtain medical histories and take other steps.

During Proctor’s hearing, Dr. Phillip Rodgers said Proctor would have had to conduct 60 patients every day for an entire year in order to legally issue that many certifications, according to a report from the Detroit Free Press.

Proctor, who has an office in Baldwin -- nearly 100 miles north of Grand Rapids -- has disputed that he issued nearly 22,000 certifications, but admits it was over 1,000.

The appeals court found no evidence to overturn the suspension.
