DEARBORN (WWJ) - The Dearborn Police Department issued a public advisory Friday afternoon after authorities noticed a recent crime surge is leaving residents' cars without a steering wheel.
Individuals have been seen targeting cars parked on city streets and in parking lots during the night -- they smash windows to gain entry and tear the steering wheel from the column. Police said while the thieves take the entire wheel, its the vehicle airbags they're after.
Police also noticed the thieves have a particular taste for GM's Chevrolet Malibu.
“I ask that our citizens be vigilant and immediately contact the police department if they observe this sort of criminal activity in our neighborhoods," Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin warned.
"These crimes of opportunity not only have a direct impact on individual residents, but our community as a whole.”
There have been several reports in recent weeks which led police to issue the warning. Investigators are currently following up on tips and working with local partners to find those that are responsible.
The department has asked the community to stay vigilant and report any information to 313-943-2240.
