DETROIT (WWJ) -- Neighborhood Vaccine Week is on its way to the city of Detroit in an effort to get residents vaccinated as the city sees a surge in positive COVID-19 cases.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced Monday the city will roll out the new plan to get Detroiters vaccinated, with eight additional vaccine locations throughout the city starting Monday, April 12.

Throughout the week there will be one or two vaccination sites operating across the city, with each city council district hosting at least one site throughout the week. The sites will be operated in partnership with the Detroit Public Schools Community District and the Islamic Center of Detroit.

Officials said each site will offer the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. All Detroiters 16 and older are eligible to receive the shot.

Vaccines will be offered at the following locations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Monday, April 12 -- Henry Ford High School, 20000 Evergreen
Monday, April 12 -- Western High School, 1500 Scotten
Tuesday, April 13 -- Randolph CTE School, 17101 Hubbell
Wednesday, April 14 -- Brenda Scott Academy, 18440 Hoover
Wednesday, April 14 -- Cass Tech High School, 2501 Second Ave.
Thursday, April 15 -- Breithaupt Career Center, 9300 Hubbell
Thursday, April 15 -- Islamic Center of Detroit, 14350 Tireman
Friday, April 16 -- East English Village Prep, 5020 Cadieux

All sites are in addition to vaccination sites at places like the TCF Center and outreach programs like Community Saturdays.

Officials say the goal of the effort is to reach more Detroiters as the city has seen a recent surge in cases. Duggan says the case rate in Detroit has jumped from just over 2 percent to 16 percent in the last month, while the number of people hospitalized has tripled to more than 250.

Only 21 percent of Detroiters have received doses of the vaccine -- compared to 36 percent statewide, according to city officials.

“This is part of our expansion of vaccine choice – providing a chance to get the Johnson and Johnson one shot vaccine near your neighborhood" Duggan said in a statement. “DPSCD is excited to partner with the City to provide greater neighborhood access to the vaccine. We know that greater access and use of the vaccine not only protects us from COVID but allows more families to send their children to school.”
