(WWJ) A Detroit man is facing multiple felony charges after his young son shot himself with a gun he found at home.

The incident happened at around 1:40 p.m. last Thursday, at the family's home on Pelkey St., in the area of Gratiot Ave. and E. McNichols.

According to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, it's alleged that 53-year-old James Curtis Hill, Jr. left his handgun unsecured in a place in the house where his 5-year-old son son was able to get his hands on it.

The boy picked up the gun and shot himself in the right side of his head, officials said.

The child was taken to a local hospital for treatment for his injuries.

There is no update on his condition at this time.

Hill is charged with two counts of Second Degree Child Abuse, one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, two counts of Felony Firearm, one count of Possession of Cocaine, and one count of Possession of Heroin.

He was arraigned in 36th District Court Monday and received a $25,000 bond, on the condition that he wear a GPS tether and have no contact with the complaining witness if he's released.

Hill will be back in court for a Probable Cause Conference scheduled for Sept. 15, followed by a Preliminary Exam scheduled for Sept. 22.

Detroit residents should note that gun locks are distributed for free through the Detroit Police Department, along with information on gun safety. Check with your local precinct for current availability.
