Detroit man charged with first-degree murder of his girlfriend, whose body was found in east side intersection

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit man faces the prospect of life in prison without parole if he's convicted as charged in the slaying of his girlfriend on the city's east side.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced Monday that 31-year=old Eugene Demarcus McKeithan has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder in the fatal shooting of Veronica Smart.

Just after 1 a.m. on Thursday, July 20, Detroit police officers were called to investigate a reported shooting at the intersection of Marseilles and Minerva streets, just east of I-94 on Detroit's east side.

That's where they found the victim, identified as a 34-year-old Detroit resident, lying face down and unresponsive in the street, according to prosecutors.

The victim had suffered a gunshot wound to the head, and was pronounced dead by EMS at the scene.

After further investigation, police said it is alleged that, while driving near that intersection, McKeithan pulled a handgun and shot Smart, who was his girlfriend, fatally wounding her.

It's alleged that he then pulled her from the vehicle, leaving her in the roadway, before fleeing the scene.

McKeithan was arrested later the same day.

Along with the murder charge. he is also facing one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and two counts of Felony Firearm.

McKeithan was arraigned in 36thDistrict Court on Sunday and remanded to jail without bond, according to the prosecutor's office. He will be back in court Probable Cause Conferences scheduled for July 31, followed by a Preliminary Examination set for August 7.
