DETROIT (WWJ) -- Police said driving way too fast was one factor which lead to a crash that left a 31-year-old Detroit man dead.

Michigan State Police (MSP) said they received phone calls just before 7 a.m. Monday on reports of a crashed vehicle on M-10/the Lodge Freeway.

An investigation revealed that the driver of a SUV was exiting from southbound M-10 to Wyoming Avenue in Detroit. However, due to excessive speed, the driver was unable to make the turn and went straight instead.

The vehicle then crossed over the ramp from Wyoming to southbound M-10, went airborne and struck the embankment on the far side of the ramp.

The driver was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

“This is another example where risky driving behaviors cost someone their life," MSP First Lieutenant Mike Shaw said.

“Speed, following too close and distracted driving are the causes of too many preventable crashes.”

There was no one else in the SUV.

No other vehicles were involved.
