DETROIT (WWJ) - Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has levied multiple charges against a driver from Detroit who police say caused a fatal car collision early Thursday morning on the Southfield-Detroit border after recklessly speeding from police.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's office said 21-year old Jordan Strawter of Detroit was charged with one count of Reckless Driving Causing Death, one count of Driving with License Suspended/Revoked/Denied Causing Death, and one count of First-Degree Fleeing and Eluding Causing Death.
The prosecutor allege Strawter was recklessly driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the area of 8 Mile Road and Rosemont Avenue when police attempted to pull him over just after midnight on Thursday, April 28.
According to officials from the Detroit Police Department, Strawter kept accelerating at speeds of more than 70 mph in an attempt to elude police; per department policy, the officers disengaged.
Strawter continued to travel eastbound on 8 Mile at a dangerous speed before crashing into a car driven by 32-year-old Detroit native, Kendle McCallum, at the intersection of northbound Southfield Service Drive.
McCallum was fatally injured and pronounced dead on scene by medics.
Strawter was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash, the severity of which was not released by authorities.
Along with Strawter, Police officials said there were two other suspects inside the Jeep, one of which had an apparent gunshot wound. All three were taken into custody and a gun was recovered.
Authorities noted the person was not shot by officers and a preliminary investigation showed no policy violations, though an internal investigation is underway.
Police have not released any information about the people who were taken into custody. Officials say the investigation is ongoing and no further details will be released at this time.
Strawter is expected to be arraigned on Friday or Saturday in the 36th District Court, the prosecutor's office said.
