DETROIT (WWJ) – A woman is dead and three people are in custody after a high-speed crash on Detroit’s northwest side early Thursday morning.
Shortly after midnight Thursday Detroit police officers spotted a Jeep Grand Cherokee speeding in the area of 8 Mile Road and Rosemont Avenue and tried to pull the driver over.
The driver of the Jeep kept accelerating at speeds of more than 70 mph, and the officers disengaged, per department policy, officials said.
The Jeep continued speeding and slammed into a Ford SUV at the intersection of 8 Mile and the Southfield Service Drive, killing a 32-year-old woman in the Ford.
Police officials say there were three suspects inside the Jeep, one of which had an apparent gunshot wound. All three were taken into custody and a gun was recovered.
Authorities noted the person was not shot by officers and a preliminary investigation showed no policy violations, though an internal investigation is underway.
Police have not released any information about the people who were taken into custody. Officials say the investigation is ongoing and no further details will be released at this time.
