DETROIT (WWJ) – Detroit police are asking for tips from the community after an officer was nearly run down by a driver in a stolen vehicle on Tuesday afternoon.
It all unfolded at a Sunoco gas station near Plymouth and Wyoming on the city’s west side when undercover officers in the area noticed two stolen cars parked at the gas station, according to a report from Fox 2.
The report says a marked squad car showed up and the officer confronted one of the drivers.
That’s when the suspect got into what is believed to be a blue SUV and nearly hit the officer. The driver hit several vehicles while fleeing, according to the report.
Detroit Police Chief James White told Fox 2 the officer fired shots at the driver as they fled the scene.
Both suspects got away in the SUV that nearly struck the officer.
White called it “an unnecessary situation.”
"Very serious, very dangerous. But the officers put their lives on the line everyday for all of us, and this is another example of that,” White said.
Authorities have not released many details about the situation, including descriptions of the suspects.
Police have not said whether the other stolen vehicle has been recovered and returned to the owner.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detroit police at (313) 267-4600 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. All Crime Stoppers tipsters will remain anonymous.
