DETROIT (WWJ) – Detroit police are questioning a person of interest in connection with the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy at a gas station earlier this month, an incident police previously said likely stemmed from a social media dispute.

Police on Thursday said the person of interest has been detained and is currently being questioned. Authorities previously identified a 16-year-old boy as a person of interest.

Authorities had not identified that teen as a suspect in that case, but said they wanted to talk with him because they believed he may know the person who shot the teen on Jan. 7 at a Mobil gas station in the 11000 block of 7 Mile Road, near Outer Drive.

It was not immediately clear whether the person in questioning on Thursday was the same teen.

A week after the shooting police said there were indications that a dispute happened on social media -- and then the victim and suspect met at the convenience store "to settle it with a fist fight," according to White.

“I can’t fathom the pain and anguish the family must be feeling knowing their loved one is not coming home,” Detroit Police Chief James White said in a press release Thursday. “The victim was a child and this is a senseless murder that did not need to happen. We would like to thank the community for their tips and help in this ongoing homicide investigation.”

Authorities say this is still an active investigation and are asking anyone who knows something about the shooting to call the Detroit Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 313-596-2260 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
