DETROIT (WWJ) – A standoff with Detroit police on the city's west side has ended after about nine hours.
Detroit police were called to a home in the 7700 block of Artesian, near the Southfield Freeway and Tireman Road, around 10:30 a.m. after a woman attacked her boyfriend inside the home. Neighbors were asked to stay inside and others were told to stay away from the area during the standoff.
Detroit Police Chief James White said early Wednesday afternoon the man was stabbed multiple times in the arm and wrist and was hiding inside a bathroom for his safety.
Special Response Team and Crisis Intervention Team officers were called to the scene to negotiate with the woman in hopes of ending the situation peacefully, which ultimately happened.
Authorities were able to get the man who was attacked out of the home, as well as a 2-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, who helped police by throwing a weapon out of a second-story window. Neither child was injured, according to police.
In a press briefing after the resolution, Deputy Chief Franklin Hayes called that 15-year-old boy a hero for keeping officers informed what was happening inside and "making the courageous and the absolute brave decision to take that firearm, throw it out the window, to separate it from his mother so she could not harm anyone inside the home, including herself."
Authorities have not released the age of the woman or the adult victim, who was treated for his injuries after getting out of the house.
White said officers were able to speak with the teen as he hung out a second-story window and got him to throw one gun out of the window.
"But the situation became a little more volatile, they heard a gunshot, they had to retreat," White said.
That's when police called in the SRT and CIT negotiators. After recovering the weapon tossed from the window, investigators soon learned there were as many as five more weapons and multiple knives inside the home.
Family members told police at the scene the woman suffers from bipolar disorder and has been refusing to take her medication.
Family members also said there are multiple other children, but none of them are believed to be inside. White said investigators are "confident" the suspect is the only person remaining in the home.
The woman is threatening to commit suicide, according to White, and negotiators are "taking it slow" and hoping to bring the situation to a peaceful resolution.
Police officials had been asking people in the neighborhood to shelter in place and telling others to avoid the area as they negotiate.
The situation came hours after another barricaded gunman was arrested following an 11-hour standoff with Detroit police near Evergreen and I-96.
