DETROIT (WWJ) – The Black Door, a rental hall on Detroit’s east side where at least four people were shot in separate incidents over the weekend, has been shut down.

Detroit Deputy Police Chief Franklin Hayes announced Monday officials with the Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department (BSEED) shut the business down after conducting an investigation in the wake of the shootings.

BSEED officials learned the business – in the area of East Warren and Cadieux – was zoned for retail, not as an event hall.

Authorities said over the weekend there was a shooting at the Black Door around 4:30 p.m. that left two men and a woman injured.

That shooting came about 12 hours after someone else had been shot at the business, according to police.

Officials have not released many details about either shooting, including the names and ages of the victims or what led to the violence.

Detroit police made an arrest early Sunday morning after a standoff at a home on the east side. The barricaded suspect is believed to be connected to the triple shooting, officials said Sunday.

Officials said Monday Detroit Police Chief James White has “made it a priority to investigate businesses when a crime occurs, so if it's operating illegally it will be shut down for the safety of residents and the community.”

Speaking at a briefing on Monday, Hayes said it is “incumbent upon any business owner” to be open and operate lawfully.

“It’s a disservice and a slap in the face to other responsible business owners here in our city who go through all the necessary steps to make sure that whether it’s to work, whether it’s recreation, whether it’s a concert, whatever it may be, to ensure that it is safe for the patrons that they look to host,” Hayes said.

Authorities have not released any information about the suspect who was arrested Sunday or whether any suspects had been identified in the prior shooting.
