WATERFORD (WWJ) -- The DNR is looking into the deaths of at least two dozen mute swans on Maceday Lake in Waterford.
Animal welfare advocates fear that intentional poisoning could be behind the strange deaths, which residents began noticing back in January, according to WXYZ.
The DNR is currently waiting on test results to determine the cause of death. If it’s something unnatural, PETA is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for any information leading to the person or persons responsible.
Lt. Todd Szyska, DNR law enforcement supervisor of southeast Michigan, told WXYZ that swans are federally protected, and if they were intentionally poisoned, those involved could face misdemeanor charges.
Anyone who has information on the investigation is encouraged to get in touch with the DNR via their 24/7 dispatch center, at 1-800-292 7800.
