DETROIT (WWJ) - A drive-by shooting in North Detroit struck two men Friday afternoon, killing one and leaving the other in serious condition while police search for a suspect.
Detroit Police Chief James White, who briefed the developing situation via Facebook live, said two men — in their 20s and 50s — were walking to the store along Lantz and Albany around 2:15 p.m. when a black Chrysler 300 vehicle approached them and shots rang out.
White said both victims were hit by gunfire; the man in is 50s died of his injuries while the other man in his 20s was transported to a local hospital and is listed in serious condition.
"It does appear the shots came from a long gun," White said, "[Police] were actually in the area patrolling and [an officer] heard the shots come out, so we've got a pretty good idea of at least the vehicle we are looking for and pretty sure by the end of the day we're going to know the perpetrator we're looking for."
Investigators are in the process of collecting information to catch the suspect responsible for the crime; White described the area as an "active homicide scene" and hopes to obtain the license plate number of the suspect's vehicle soon.
"I don't think it's random," White said when asked if the victims were targeted. White said the two men were not related and believed they were acquaintances that just happened to be walking to the store together.
While police are determining the motive behind the shooting, White said they "had a pretty good idea."
Information is being withheld while authorities notify the families of the victims. White said more information will be released as police continue to conduct their investigation.
'I'm confident our investigators are going to do what they do well and get an arrest soon," White said.
