DETROIT (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police are continuing to look for anyone who witnessed a deadly hit-and-run on the Southfield Freeway on earlier this month.
The crash happened on the southbound side 0f M-39, near Warren Avenue, sometime between the hours of 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 8, according to MSP.
Police were initially told by 911 callers that a partially clothed woman — later identified as a 62-year-old Detroit resident — was “dancing in the lanes of travel.” Callers later reported seeing the woman's body in the left lane.
In an update the day after the crash, MSP officials said while they've talked to witnesses who saw the woman both before and after she was hit, they really need to speak with anyone who witnessed the crash itself.
On Tuesday authorities renewed pleas for tips in the case, asking anyone who may have seen it to call police.
"We are hopeful with the amount of traffic on that section of the Southfield Freeway that someone saw the vehicle involved in this crash," MSP officials wrote on Aug. 9 on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
At this point, police believe the woman was hit by "an unknown driver of a unknown vehicle." There is no description at all of the suspect or the suspect's car, as the investigation continues.
The woman, police said, did have a history of mental health issues. Her name was not released.
MSP is asking anyone who witnessed the crash, or who has any information about the wanted driver or the suspect vehicle, to call the Metro South Post at 734-287-5000.
Tipsters who would like to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speak Up (800-773-2587). The public can also submit anonymous tips online at this link.
