FLAT ROCK (WWJ) - Emergency response crews are scrambling to find the source of a mysterious chemical leak first reported near the Huron River late Monday night in Flat Rock.

Congresswoman Debbie Dingell said officials from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) are currently on scene and investigating the source of the leak which was detected near 26579 West Huron Drive.

"My office will remain in close contact with all necessary federal, state, and local officials and we are monitoring this situation closely," Dingell said in a statement.

The leak was first reported to authorities Monday night around 7 p.m. after a sheen was noticed on a stream that feeds into the Huron River, ELGE spokeswoman Jill Greenberg confirmed . The fire department then placed booms into the water in an effort to contain it.

"The situation is definitely evolving as we speak," Greenberg said Tuesday to The Detroit News.

At this time, officials do not know what the substance is or where it came from.

Flat Rock isn't unknown to chemical spills. Areas in the city were forced to evacuate last year when the Ford Flat Rock Assembly Plant experienced a fuel spill that contaminated the city's sanitary sewer system with benzene-containing vapors and unleaded gasoline.

The spill took weeks for emergency crews to clean up.
