FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) – Police are issuing a warning to pet owners as they believe someone is trying to harm animals by placing “tainted marshmallows” on the ground.

Farmington Hills police officials say they’re investigating after multiple residents found marshmallows with tack nails or fishing hooks inside them in recent weeks, all in the area of 14 Mile and Farmington Roads.

Authorities believe the marshmallows are being “placed on the ground to attract and cause harm to area pets or wildlife.” Officials say to date, though, they’re not aware of any animals or people who have been harmed by the marshmallows.

The Farmington Hills Police Department first received a report last May after someone found one in the 30000 block of Hunters Whip Lane. A second incident was reported in December in the 33000 block of Heritage Hills Drive.

Police officials say they received another complaint on Sunday, Jan. 15 in the 34000 block of Glouster Circle and another one on Wednesday at the intersection of Heritage Hills Drive and Hunters Whip Lane.

The department shared photos of two heart-shaped marshmallows with pieces of metal sticking out. Another photo shows a food item with metal sticking out, while a third photo shows it next to small tack nails.

FHPD Chief Jeff King is asking residents in the area to keep an eye out and contact police if they see anyone acting suspiciously.

Residents are also being told to pay close attention to their pets when walking them to keep them from eating these marshmallows.

Anyone who knows something about the suspicious marshmallows should contact the Farmington Hills Police Department Command Desk at 248-871-2610.
