TROY (WWJ) -- A Rochester Hills man is facing a drunken driving charge after police said they found him slumped over the steering wheel of a car in a shopping center parking lot.

Troy Police said officers were conducting a patrol in the parking at 890 E. Big Beaver Rd. just before 2:30 a.m. last Saturday when they discovered the man, passed out in a 2017 Buick LaCrosse.

Police said the car was parked with the engine running near Mission BBQ with the driver, and only occupant, asleep in the driver's seat.

Officers reported it took them several tries to wake the man up, and there was a strong smell of booze coming from the vehicle.

When questioned, the man allegedly admitted to police that he'd come from a bar in Ferndale where he'd had six shots of tequila and a couple of beers before driving.

After failing a series of field sobriety tests, the man submitted to a breathalyzer test with a result of .132% BAC — which is well above the legal limit for driving in Michigan.

The 61-year-old man was arrested and taken to the Troy Police lock-up where he tested at .13% on a chemical breath test and was issued a citation for Operating While Intoxicated (OWI).

His name was not immediately released.
