Fatal three-car crash on I-94 involved semi, stolen vehicle: police

DETROIT (WWJ) A three-vehicle crash involving a semi on I-94 in Detroit has claimed a man’s life.

Michigan State Police said the investigation revealed that a GMC Terrain had broken down, blocking the right lane of westbound I-94 near Lonyo around 1:20 a.m. Saturday. The dovetail semi-tractor braked in time without hitting the GMC, according to State Police.

However, a Jeep Wrangler did not stop in time, struck the rear of the semi-tractor, and sent it careening into the broken-down GMC.

The Jeep driver, a 34-year-old Ecorse man, was rushed to the local hospital and pronounced dead. State Police said he was not wearing a seatbelt.

Further investigation revealed that the GMC was stolen. Witnesses told State Police they saw two people running from the GMC following the crash.

No other injuries were reported.

The victim’s name has not been released. The investigation is ongoing.
