FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) -- Firefighters worked tirelessly Monday afternoon, as a blaze ripped through the upper floor of an apartment building in Farmington Hills, forcing residents to flee.

Just after 11 a.m., a fire was reported in the attic of the Retreat at Farmington Hills apartment complex, located at Middlebelt and 12 Mile.

According to Farmington Hills Fire Chief Jon Unruh, flames could be seen "shooting through the roof" of the burning structure.

Residents of the eight units inside were evacuated before fire rescue arrived. Luckily, no one was injured.

Crews from five stations -- about 25 first responders -- quickly got control of the fire and had extinguished the blaze within 45 minutes.

Two firefighters were taken to an area hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion, but Chief Unruh says they are in good condition and expected to recover without issue.

There is no word yet on how the fire started, but the Farmington Hills Fire Marshall is on the scene conducting an investigation.
