Eight families in Lincoln Park have been displaced in the frigid cold after a fire destroyed their apartment building.

The fire took off Monday afternoon at a building along Goddard Street at Seventh. One person was a injured in the fire that investigators believe was sparked by a cooking accident.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to one unit, but smoke damage made eight units uninhabitable. Gabriela Moklar, 9, lost everything in the apartment she shares with her mom and two cats. But Moklar told FOX 2 everyone was safe and that's all she cares about.

"I don’t really care about all that stuff. I was only worried about my mom and the cats. I don’t care about the stuff that was inside the house. I just cared about the people that were in there - my family and all the people in the apartment," Gabriella said.

All the occupants of those apartments were displaced while temperatures hovered near 20 degrees.

For right now, the American Red Cross agreed to put occupants up in a hotel. But that ends today. To fill the gap afterward, Lincoln Park School District is collecting donations to try to find them shelter until the apartments can be fixed.
