DETROIT (WWJ) – Four people are dead after a single-vehicle crash left I-96 in Detroit closed for several hours Sunday night.

The driver of a GMC Yukon was headed west in the express lanes of I-96 shortly before 8 p.m. when they hit the base of a bridge near Grand River Avenue, according to Michigan State Police.

The Yukon suffered significant damage in the crash, as the driver and three others were all ejected from the SUV and killed. Witnesses said the vehicle had been travelling at high speed.

In a Monday morning update, MSP officials shared that all four people had been identified and their families contacted.

The occupants were all men. A 21-year-old was determined to be the driver, while the passengers were 20, 22 and 25. Names were not made public.

“Once again a driver’s decision to drive recklessly cost lives on our roadways.” MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said in a Tweet. “This decision will not only affect those families involved but also witnesses and first responders on scene. Please drive responsibly. Lives are at stake.”

An investigation into the crash is ongoing, with autopsy results pending. I-96 was closed Sunday evening but has since reopened.
