DETROIT (WWJ) – Detroit’s New Center neighborhood is set to undergo a massive transformation over the next decade, as Henry Ford Health System, the Detroit Pistons and Michigan State University made a $2.5 billion announcement Wednesday.

Henry Ford CEO and President Bob Riney said Wednesday the organization will be building a “world class medical center and research campus” featuring a brand new hospital facility and patient tower.

The building, which will span more than a million square feet to the tune of $1.8 billion, will be located on the south side of W. Grand Boulevard, directly across from the existing Henry Ford Hospital.

Riney said HFHS plans to celebrate the brand new facility while “preserving and using the legacy hospital as well.”

In addition to the new hospital building, the health system will partner with MSU to create a new health sciences joint research center. With investment money from Pistons owner Tom Gores, they'll also be bringing new housing, retail, dining and green space to the area – the very neighborhood where Henry Ford laid its roots more than a century ago, according to Riney.

“We plan to build expanded, revitalized, transformed, state-of-the-art – you can use every phrase that you want – a revitalized Henry Ford Hospital and campus that will continue to serve people that have options and come from far away destinations, as well as every single member of our neighborhoods, even and especially those that are most vulnerable,” he said.

Mayor Mike Duggan said in addition to the medical facilities, the development will give Detroiters “more opportunities to live, work and play, right here in this neighborhood."

Officials expect to break ground on the project in 2024. No estimated date of completion was given. More information on the project is available on the Henry Ford website.
