(WWJ) - As temperatures soar across Metro Detroit this weekend, meteorologists warned heat indices will create dangerous outdoor conditions for residents and their pets.
The National Weather Service issued a Heat Advisory for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties in effect from from noon through 10 p.m. Sunday as a combination of muggy nights and several days of heat indices over 90° will lead to "to increased heat stress in Metro Detroit."
"The affects of the heat will be most notable in the more urbanized areas of Southeast Oakland, Southern Macomb and much of Wayne County, especially in the City of Detroit and neighboring communities," the NSW said.
Highs are expected to reach 87° to 91° on Saturday with temperatures climbing even higher to 93° on Sunday.
Heat index values will reach 95°-100° on both weekend days.
Weather experts said residents should restrict time outdoors and reschedule activities to early morning or later on at night.
People at higher risk for heat-related illness include young children, the elderly, infants, pregnant persons and those who have chronic illnesses.
"Age and certain conditions make the body less able to regulate temperature," experts said.
The NSW recommends residents take the following measures to keep themselves safe and prepared:
•Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room if possible, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
• Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
• Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
• Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.
• To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
• Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
