SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - The National Weather Service said damage to trees and power lines are expected as a powerful wind storm bringing gusts near 60 mph moves into the listening area on Sunday.
A High Wind Warning is in effect from 3 a.m. Sunday morning through 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon over the entire southeastern part of the state.
Bay City, Bad Axe, Saginaw, Caro, Sandusky, Owosso, Flint, Lapeer, Port Huron, Howell, Pontiac, Warren, Ann Arbor, Detroit, Adrian, and Monroe will all be affected as southwest winds increase after midnight.
Meteorologists said some gusts could reach up to 50 mph before 3 a.m. Sunday, but the main concern comes as a strong cold front moves through the region from early to mid-Sunday.
NWS expected the cold front to sweep into metro Detroit by 10 a.m., with peak wind gusts reaching 60 mph.
A Hazardous Weather Outlook was also posted by the NWS early Saturday morning. Meteorologists said there was a slight chance for an isolated thunderstorm with the approaching cold front, which would only enhance already damaging winds.
The high winds are expected to impact power lines and trees, resulting in power outages. Weather experts warn that travel will be dangerous, especially for those operating high profile vehicles.
Residents are being urged to stay indoors and away from trees and branches. The NWS recommends staying in the lower level of your home during a windstorm and avoid windows if possible.
Drivers should exercise extreme caution and only travel if necessary.
