DETROIT (WWJ) -- A large fire tore through a home on the city's west side, leaving the structure's inhabitants standing in the cold, wondering where to go next.
Early Monday morning, the Detroit Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at an occupied home on Strathmoor Street, in the area of Grand River Ave and I-96.
The flames were already extinguished by the time WWJ's Charlie Langton reported from the scene at 6 a.m. Firefighters were clearing debris and checking for hotspots.
According to Langton, the fire had been severe. The inside of the home was completely destroyed and uninhabitable.
The house's residents escaped without injury, but were still trying to determine what to do next.
"I see at least four, maybe five, people next door with literally no place to go," Langton said. "The house is a total loss. These people are cold. They're looking for some place to go."
At this time, it is unclear how the fire started.
