TROY (WWJ) – Police are investigating after a Troy man fell victim to a scammer who offered to sell his artwork via Instagram then threatened him with a “hired assassin.”
The man told police he was contacted by an unknown suspect on Instagram on May 20. The scammer allegedly told him she would sell his artwork for $2000 and give him $500.
The suspect sent him three digital checks totaling $2700 and then demanded to be reimbursed for the overpayment before the checks cleared, according to Troy police.
Authorities say the victim blocked the scammer’s number and was immediately contacted by another number who claimed to be a hired assassin that was hired to hurt him if he did not comply and send money.
The second number also sent graphic photos which “caused the victim to become concerned.” He then sent multiple payments to the suspect via Cash App and Venmo.
The victim spoke to a family member, who realized it was a scam and they contacted police.
Authorities have not released any information about a possible suspect and have not said whether any arrests will be made.
