DETROIT (WWJ) - From the opening riff of Jack White's National Anthem performance at Opening Day for the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park, listeners couldn't help but feel the rocker's rendition reminded them of a certain Bikini Bottom.
Reaction to the Southwest Detroit native's take on The Star Spangled Banner Friday afternoon ran across the board, with some fans praising the group for a unique and classic rock vibe reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix.
"Wow, that was SO good and I'm a Cleveland fan," a user wrote on social media.
"Just rad," another commenter said.
Others definitely picked up on the Surfer Rock sound which reminded fans of the music used on the popular children's TV show SpongeBob SquarePants.
"What in the SpongeBob?" one Twitter user wrote.
"Bikini bottom type beat," another fan commented.
The 12-time Grammy winner and his group played an instrumental version of the National Anthem to a nearly-sold out crowd of thousands as fans were welcomed to the ball park for the first time in two years since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"You already know Jack White wouldn't miss Detroit's biggest party!" The Detroit Tigers said online when the organization announced White would perform on Opening Day.
One fan told WWJ Reporter Ryan Marshall that he believed the anthem should've been sung.
"You're going to play guitar?" Nicholas Green of Port Huron said. "I don't even play guitar and I probably could've done that. I mean, I would've just liked a little bit more."
White kicks off the first show in his nationwide tour Friday evening at the Masonic Temple in support of his latest album Fear of the Dawn, the first of two full-length solo records. Fear of the Dawn drops Friday while his second album, Entering Heaven Alive, debuts on July 22.
