Some workers who make the F-150 truck will be laid off next week from the Ford Dearborn Truck Plant.

Ford says the factory will eliminate two shifts due to a shortage of computer chips. Ford will also drop one shift at its Kansas City Assembly Plant in Missouri.

Dearborn Truck employs 4,600 hourly workers and will drop from three shifts to one shift. Kansas City Assembly, which employs 7,300 hourly workers, will drop from three shifts to two.

Why are the chips so important? They're use in the infotainment system.

The cutbacks will only be for a week, the company says.

And that's important because freep.com reports the Ford F-Series is the financial backbone of Ford, a 117-year-old company. Ford is worth about $50 billion in sales annually.

"We are working closely with suppliers to address potential production constraints tied to the global semiconductor shortage and working to prioritize key vehicle lines for production, making the most of our semiconductor allocation," a company spokesman said.
