WARREN (WWJ) -- A Macomb County 6th grader is under arrest and facing charges after making a threatening social media post.

According to Warren Consolidated School (WCS) district officials, the post showed the boy with an airsoft pellet gun along with some indirect threats.

The Carter Middle School student also reposted a photo of another student -- who doesn't attend the school -- holding a gun.

The threats didn't mention the school, but officials showed concern because of the way "misinformation travels on social media." They added that this was an incident of a student making a "very bad choice."

Officials say the student is in custody and facing serious criminal charges.

School officials said they're "pleased" with the student who reported the threats, saying they did the right thing speaking to an adult for a "quick resolution" instead of further spreading the threat on social media.

"We have found that one of our most effective tools for keeping our schools safe is having students who feel comfortable sharing difficult information with adults," said the superintendent of WCS, Dr. Robert D. Livernois, in the letter.

Livernois ended the letter by reminding parents to talk to their children about making good choices.
