SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) – A Shelby Township teenager is in custody after making a terrorist threat in the aftermath of the Texas elementary school shooting that left at least 19 students and two teachers dead on Tuesday.

Shelby Township police officials say they were notified by a detective from the Texas Rangers of a terroristic social media post with threats to shoot and kill students at an unspecified school.

The Rangers’ investigation tracked the suspect to an address in Shelby Township. Local detectives then continued the investigation and identified an 18-year-old male as the suspect.

Police did not specify when exactly the alleged threat was posted online or what social media site the teen used.

Detectives responded to the suspect’s home, where he was interviewed and subsequently arrested. He was taken to the Shelby Township Police Department, pending arraignment. It was not clear when he will be charged or what he will be charged with.

Authorities have not released the suspect’s name and have not revealed the exact contents of the social media threats. It was not clear whether he is a current student.

Officials say weapons were found at the 18-year-old’s home and were removed for safe keeping.

“The Shelby Township Police Department takes all terroristic threats seriously. All similar threats will be thoroughly investigated and all perpetrators will be charged criminally,” officials said in a statement.
