Man pleads no contest to secretly recording patrons at metro Detroit tanning salon

(WWJ) -- A man charged with recording people inside the changing rooms of a metro Detroit tanning salon has pleaded no contest.

Officials say Brian Maciborski is set to be sentenced on Sept. 15 after pleading no contest to the incident, which happened at Chili Pepper’s Tanning Salon in Shelby Township in 2020.

Maciborski is accused of installing hidden video cameras and recording both minors and adults inside of a changing room at the salon.

He was also recently accused in a separate case of exposing himself at a fitness center, though officials did not disclose further details about that case.

Attorneys at Ven Johnson Law, who are representing victims in the tanning salon case, say they “plan to prove Maciborski is a notorious sexual predator.” They also say Chili Pepper’s Tanning Salon “failed to protect its patrons from a serial predator.”

Ven Johnson represents about 20 victims. He says the plea may complicate the civil case, but the owners are still responsible for the harm caused to the customers.

“When you open yourself up in a tanning salon for business and some guy walks in with a huge duffel bag full of stuff and you think he’s weird and you think he’s spending way too much time in there and doing something that you don’t know exactly what, you think it’s off and different from everyone else… you have an obligation to investigate and try to see what’s going on.”

Johnson says there are indications that Maciborski posted some of the videos online and the victims are embarrassed and concerned the videos will remain on the internet permanently.
