(WWJ) A 44-year-old Clarkston man is behind bars after authorities say he stole from Meijer, then crashed while trying to get away.

Oakland County Sheriff's deputies responded to the Meijer store at 3610 Market Place Circle in Rochester Hills Friday night on a report that a man had walked out without scanning some items.

Security officers said they'd tried to stop the thief, but he sped away in a white Cadillac Escalade.

A short time later, a 911 call came in about a white Escalade that had crashed into another vehicle at Rochester and Auburn Roads.

Deputies responded and found the Escalade parked in a nearby parking lot.

The driver was identified as the man who'd stolen from Meijer, officials said, and he was arrested. Deputies found the stolen items from Meijer in the vehicle. A 45-year-old Pontiac woman who was with the man was also taken into custody.

Officials said the woman told deputies that she had methamphetamine in her wallet, no longer wanted to use it and didn't know what to do with it. Deputies took the drugs and the woman was released pending further investigation.

The man was lodged in the Oakland County Jail to await an arraignment.
