There was a short pursuit, and the officer was able to stop the vehicle to investigate, police said.

The driver smelled like alcohol, was slurring his speech, and "it was clear to the officer that the driver was highly intoxicated," according to the police report.

The man was taken into custody on an expected charged of arrest for Operating While Under The Influence Of Alcohol, pending results of a blood test.

The police department on Tuesday released video of the chase and arrest, noting that, thanks to the officer's work, "this very dangerous driver was removed from the streets before seriously injuring or killing another driver or himself."

With this incident and others like it in mind, the SHPD said it will be increasing its efforts to keep the public safe, and will be "targeting the streets" to locate and arrest drunk drivers in our community during the holiday season.

"The Sterling Heights Police would like to strongly encourage the public, especially during the holiday season to please be responsible when consuming alcohol," said Lt. Mario Bastianelli Public Informational Officer for the SHPD. "There are many forms of transportation that can be utilized instead of driving under the influence of alcohol."

The suspect's name has not been released as he awaits an arraignment.
