DETROIT (WWJ) – The search is on for a man who stole a tip jar from The Congregation, a former church turned into a popular bar and restaurant in Detroit.

Detroit police have released surveillance footage of a man at The Congregation – 9300 Rosa Parks Boulevard, near the Boston-Edison neighborhood – around 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 5.

The suspect is seen talking with an employee at the front counter, and when the employee turns away, the suspect grabs the jar and takes off with nearly $300 in tips, police said.

Police are asking anyone who may recognize the suspect to call the Detroit Police Department’s 10th Precinct at 313-596-1040 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

The crime happened on the two-year anniversary for The Congregation. The business is inside of a building that was originally built in 1924 for the congregation of St. Luke’s Evangelical Church, which had burnt down several years earlier, according to the bar’s website.

It now features craft cocktails, coffee, breakfast, sandwiches and more.
