MT. CLEMENS, Mich. (WWJ) – A Detroit man is facing felony charges and a court-ordered psychiatric exam after allegedly ramming his car into the Macomb County Administration Building on Saturday night.

Nicholas Thompson, 28, is accused of driving his Honda into the administrative office, backing up and doing it again, before turning himself in to police.

He has been charged with one count of malicious destruction of a building -- $20,000 or more -- and malicious destruction of fire or police property.

It all unfolded around 7:15 p.m. Saturday, March 5, when the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office received calls about a vehicle that had driven through the front entrance of the building at 1 S. Main Street, before fleeing the scene.

Surveillance video shows Thompson’s car slam through the glass doors, backup and do it again, before speeding off. The crash caused extensive damage, but no one was in that area of the building at the time, according to the sheriff’s office. No injuries were reported in the incident.

As authorities were searching for the suspect’s vehicle, Thompson entered the lobby of the sheriff’s office and admitted to slamming into the building. He made statements to police about his intentional act to cause damage to the building, but authorities have not released a possible motive.

Police found Thompson’s vehicle in an open field on the south side of the Macomb County Jail. He had crashed it into a commercial-size generator, police said. The vehicle, which was heavily damaged, was impounded.

He was taken into custody and police recovered a handgun. Thompson is a valid CPL holder, the sheriff’s office said.

He was not injured in the incident.

Thompson was arraigned Monday in the Clinton Township 41B District Court and given a $500,000 or 10% cash surety bond. He is due back in court for a preliminary cause conference on March 14.
