TAYLOR (WWJ) - State police are blaming high speeds for a serious crash that killed a 43-year old Shelby Township man along I-94 late Thursday night.
According to Michigan State Police, the fatal crash occurred around 11 p.m. on May 25 as a driver, identified as 43-year-old male from Shelby Township, was speeding in a GMC truck on westbound I-94.
Based on their initial investigation, troopers said the man exited the freeway at Telegraph Road, but did not slow down enough to navigate around the curve at the bottom of the exit ramp.
The truck went off the roadway, crossed through a drainage ditch and careened onto Telegraph Road.
The vehicle crossed all lanes of traffic, northbound and southbound, before it slammed through a retaining and/or sound wall.
When authorities arrived at the scene, the man was pronounced dead.
The man's identity has not been released. Troopers said his family has been notified.
"As we commemorate this Memorial Day weekend, let us make road safety a priority.” MSP F/Lt Mike Shaw said. “Buckle up, drive responsibly and ensure that the memories with family and friends created this weekend are filled with fun and not sadness due to a preventable crash.”
No other details are available. An investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
