(WWJ) A man has died after falling from a cliff in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
According to Michigan State Police with the Calumet Post, 75-year-old Douglas Brent Welker, of Pelkie, slipped while hiking Monday near a waterfall in the Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness.
MSP responded to the scene — near Houghton County's Laird Township, west of Marquette — at around 12:15 p.m.
An investigation found that Welker was hiking down a trail at the edge of the cliff when he lost his footing, tumbled down about 20 feet and hit his head.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The fatal fall was found to be accidental, according to MSP, and foul play is not suspected.
State Police want to remind the remind the public to always use caution when hiking on steep trails, whether or not you're familiar with the area.
