BRIGHTON (WWJ) -- A man is dead following a standoff with police in a Meijer parking lot in Brighton.

According to Brighton Police, it started around 2:30 p.m. Sunday when officers began investigating a U-Haul truck — which had been reported stolen — and a travel trailer parked near the store on W. Grand River Ave., near I-96.

The registered owner of the trailer had several warrants for his arrest, including a felony warrant involving a weapon, and was also a suspect in the theft of the U-Haul, police said.

Officers made several attempts to contact the man and woman inside the trailer urging them to come out, but initially didn't receive an answer.

In the interest of safety, Brighton Police called for backup, officers from other jurisdictions arrived and a perimeter was established around the trailer.

Finally, officers using a loudspeaker made contact with woman who agreed to come out.

Police were eventually able to speak with the man — who remained inside the trailer — but after about thirty minutes of negotiations the man's phone disconnected.

After several hours, and no further communication with the man, members of the SWAT team entered the trailer and found the man dead.

Police said it is believed that the man took his own life.

The Brighton PD added, in a news release: "During the incident there were no children involved. Also, there were no reported injuries to officers on scene, citizens, and at no point were shots fired by police or at police."

The Brighton City Police were assisted by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, Green Oak Township Police Department, Hamburg Township Police Department, and the Metro Parks Police Department.

The man's name was not released.
