(WWJ) – A man is in critical condition after a chain-reaction crash involving four vehicles in a work zone on I-75 early Sunday morning.
It all unfolded in Midtown Detroit when Michigan State Police troopers were responding to a crash along northbound I-75 near the Ferry Avenue overpass around 2:45 a.m.
MSP officials say a driver told them of another crash behind the scene. When troopers showed up, they found the wreckage of a four-vehicle crash.
The preliminary investigation showed a Nissan Rogue was headed north in the right lane of the construction zone when it was rear-ended by a Mercedes-Benz sedan.
Authorities say a Dodge Ram 1500 then slammed into the back of the Mercedes, causing major damage to the sedan. A GMC SUV attempting to avoid the initial crash also crashed, MSP officials said.
A man driving the Mercedes was taken to a hospital and listed in critical condition. That man’s age was not revealed.
No other major injuries were reported.
MSP officials believe the drivers of the Mercedes, Ram and GMC were following too close in the work zone, though it wasn’t exactly clear what sparked the first crash.
The crash left I-75 closed at Warren for about three hours, but it has since reopened.
