(WWJ) A 23-year-old man is behind bars for a shooting that authorities say was over a love triangle.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard says the suspect's 21-year-old ex-girlfriend was sitting in a car with her new boyfriend Wednesday evening, at Hawthorne Park, on N. Telegraph Road in Pontiac, when the suspect walked up with a gun and began firing.

The victim, a 21-year-old Pontiac man, was struck in the shoulder.

Bouchard told WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeill there is pretty clear evidence in the case.

"What we had was an unusual situation where one of the victims (the ex-girlfriend) had the suspect on a speaker phone, and he actually spoke about his intent to kill when he fired the shots," the sheriff said.

The suspect was arrested at his mother's apartment after he confessed to the shooting, Bouchard said.

The mom gave consent for a search, and a semi-automatic pistol was located on the kitchen table. One 9mm bullet casing was found by OCSO evidence techs at the shooting scene.

The new boyfriend's wound is considered to be non-life threatening.

"The victim is stable, hopefully will be fine," Bouchard said. "As for lasting impact, that's still unknown... But at the moment he's stable."

The suspect was lodged in the Oakland County jail pending charges. His name has not yet been released.
