DETROIT (WWJ) -- A friend believes a Detroit man killed in a house fire early Monday morning was trying to save his beloved bulldogs from the flames.

Friends and neighbors gathered outside the burned home on Gardendale, in the area of 8 Mile Rd. and Livernois, where they learned that the victim, a man in his 30s, was found dead.

The Detroit Fire Department got a call at around 1 a.m. after heavy smoke was seen coming from the house, where a man lived with his eight to ten French and English bulldogs.

"He definitely was trying to save his puppies," Via Stewart, a longtime friend of the man, told WWJ's Charlie Langton. "He loved dogs...He cared about them like his kids, so he was definitely trying to save his dogs, his business and his home...He was just a good guy."

A Detroit Fire Department official said the man's body was burned beyond recognition.

Some of the dogs were killed in the fire, Langton reported. "However, there's at least three that I saw being rescued by family and friends," he said.

While foul play is not suspected at this time, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
