DETROIT (WWJ) -- A man who was shot by Detroit police before fleeing in a stolen vehicle is now behind bars.

According to the Detroit Police Department, officers attempted to apprehend a man on Friday at approximately 12:30 a.m. at a gas station on Schoolcraft and Outer Drive.

The officers said they recognized the man -- Rodney Holland -- who is suspected of stealing a car from a post-factory holding facility in Hamtramck last month.

They also remembered the car from a previous incident where he fled and eluded officers during a traffic stop on a prior date.

Authorities said as the officers approached the gas station, the suspect saw them as he was walking into the gas station, ran back to his vehicle and jumped into the driver’s seat.

At the same time, officers drove into the gas station and positioned their vehicle in front of the stolen vehicle.

The officers attempted to get the suspect out of the car by opening the driver’s side door, but while the door was open, the suspect put his vehicle into reverse. This maneuver rapped the two officers between the vehicle's door and the gas pump.

An officer then fired one shot, injuring Holland in the leg and abdomen.

Police said while this was unfolding, a woman was attempting to exit the front passenger side of the car but was momentarily wedged between the suspect’s fleeing vehicle and another parked vehicle.

No officers were injured in this incident.

The suspect drove away from the gas station in the stolen vehicle, which was later found near the 15700 block of Grandville without the driver or the third occupant in the vehicle, police said.

A K-9 unit tracked the suspect and third occupant to a nearby home where they were hiding. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital where he is listed in temporary serious condition.

Police said that Holland was on probation and also has an extensive criminal history, including auto thefts.

Holland was arraigned Sunday on the following charges:

• Receiving and Concealing Stolen Property - (1 Count)

• Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm (3 Counts)

• Fleeing – Police Officer (1 Count)

• Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (3 Counts)

• Resisting & Obstructing a Police Officer (3 Counts)

• Reckless Driving (1 Count)

• Habitual Offender 3rd

He was given a $250,000 bond with tether if he posts. His next court date is scheduled for May 2.
