DETROIT (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police closed a portion of I-75 Wednesday morning in Detroit after a driver reported being shot on the freeway.

MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said the man claimed he got off work on the graveyard shift at the Greektown Casino and was on I-75 northbound at Clay St., just after 3:30 a.m., when a driver in a white SUV pulled alongside him and fired shots.

The alleged victim told police that he pulled over onto the shoulder check on his vehicle before driving home to call 911.

Police used a tracking dog on the freeway to search for shell casings, but didn't find any.

While police are continuing to look into the alleged incident, Shaw told WWJ's Sandra McNeill that the man's statement includes "some "inconsistencies," and the whole story just isn't adding up.

"As our investigation is continuing on, it's appearing more and more like this did not happen on the freeway, but somewhere else," Shaw said. "Our investigators are currently working to try to determine where it actually occurred."

The driver did sustain a gunshot wound to the hip and arm, Shaw said.

Detroit EMS arrived at the man's home on the 19000 block of Canterbury Road and offered medical treatment, but the refused to go to the hospital.

MSP closed northbound I-75 at Clay for almost three hours Wednesday morning to search for evidence, but the freeway has since reopened.

Anyone who has any information on this incident is asked to call the MSP Metro South Post at 734-287-5000.
