HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) – An investigation is underway after two people were ejected from a car on a Metro Detroit freeway ramp early Sunday morning, leaving a man dead and a woman injured, a crash reportedly spurred by an earlier rear-ending incident.

It all unfolded just after midnight in Highland Park when a black Dodge Charger crashed on the eastbound Davison Freeway ramp to I-75.

When a trooper arrived on scene they saw the car, which appeared to have lost control, drove up the right embankment and struck a light pole. The Charger then rolled down the embankment and came to a rest on the right shoulder of the ramp.

Officials say the driver, a 46-year-old Detroit man was ejected from the car. The trooper performed CPR on the shoulder of the ramp until EMS arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His 52-year-old wife, who was a passenger in the car, was also ejected in the crash. She was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials say neither person was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The woman told police her husband’s car was rear-ended on the Davison near Livernois by an unknown white SUV. After that alleged incident, the woman’s husband apparently chased the white SUV at a high rate of speed until they crashed.

Authorities are not sure whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

Police are still investigating.
